I came to Hong Kong a dependent (of a student) but as of last week I'm standing on my own. I got a job! I was considering looking for work but before I could even start pounding the pavement a great opportunity just came up. I am working for a publishing company based in Hong Kong. They publish everything from financial catalogues, to coffee table books, to children’s books. I will be working with the manager of children’s books, who happens to be my Mandarin classmate. The most recent project and the one I will be spending most of my part-time hours on are language-learning materials for children learning Mandarin as a second language. My involvement will mostly be with the menial tasks but I’m excited to be using my Mandarin skills, to be working on children’s materials and to have the opportunity to learn about what goes on in a publishing company. Oh, and of course to make a little mula!
This is me off to my first day of work, which isn't far because I'm working from home right now!

HI Anne Marie,
Good to hear you got a job...I was a dependent when I moved to Ottawa (not officially) and it feels good to finally be working steadily this year. I'm glad I found your blog so now I can keep up on your adventures in HK.
Merry Christmas to you and TOm
